1 acre on Honey Springs Battlefield in HS National Historic Landmark off Battlefield Road. BLK 7 (NORTH RENTIESVILLE SUB) SEC 2-12-17 963/119 Property ID : 0000-02-12N-17E-3-001-03

The Battle of Honey Springs was the largest Civil War conflict in Indian Territory. The fight was a resounding Union victory that secured Indian Territory for the Federals, led to the capture of Ft. Smith and has been called the “Gettysburg of the West”. The battlefield has been designated a National Historic Landmark. Most of the Battlefield is owned by the Oklahoma Historical Society, but some land remains in private hands. This one acre lot is part of a small, undeveloped private subdivision in the center of the Historic Landmark and in the middle of one of the battle’s major phases. After Confederate lines broke, a route ensued that threatened intact capture of the Confederate headquarters. The Confederate Choctaw / Chickasaw Regiment and Scanland’s Texas Cavalry engaged the Federals and delayed them long enough for Confederates to evacuate the headquarters and partially burn stores. This lot was in the middle of that delaying fight. This subdivision is surrounded on three sides by Historical Society Land and is accessed by good paved road. An interesting tidbit is that the
Confederate defeat is partially attributed to faulty Mexican gunpowder with no moisture tolerance. It rained heavily the morning of the battle. Several decades ago the Historical Society conducted a large metal detecting survey on their battlefield property (not on the subdivision lots) and in areas near this lot found rolled copper arrow points. This suggests the Choctaw / Chickasaw Regiment abandoned non-functioning firearms due to the poor gunpowder and used traditional bow and arrows to protect their armies retreat. This is a rare opportunity to own a piece of Oklahoma’s Civil War and Indian Territory heritage.
