Charles Hanson, now in his older years, sit by the window looking out at Lake Artichoke
outside Correll, MN. In 1939, Charles family moved to this very farm. Charles stayed and farmed the family farm and farmed the 500 acres and enjoyed the Minnesota outdoors. You would think that this quiet old farmer had lots of just farming stories, but Charles has more stories to tell. When Charles was a kid, the lake offered a variety of fish, ducks, and other wildlife. Charles took up Taxidermy to pass away time in the Minnesota winters. This hobby turned into a passion that would take him around the world in search of Rare of North American Water Fowl, birds, and small animals.
Taxidermy would take him to work with Eskimos in Siberia in search of the rare spectacled Eider.
Charles recalls the danger of being in a boat amongst Bering Sea ice that could crush him and his boat in seconds. But he was successful in obtaining this rare species for his collection. The Collection is held in Ortanville, MN of nearly 500 species along with Indian artifacts, fossils, rocks, and other wonders of nature and the Midwest. The collection can be seen by the public at the museum.
That was not all Charles collected, about the same time he started to collect Lincolns and
Cadillac collector cars. It fit in with his nature and he loved the styling and body lines of these cars. He drove around the U.S. to add to his collection of over 20 vehicles. He retired from farming about 1985 and rented the farm ground. He continued to enjoy nature and collect classic cars. One of the cars that he bought was a 1952 Lincoln Capri that he was told by the daughter was her dad’s ad he was an agent with the FBI. Mystery surrounds that car with dual spotlights, compass, and some other unique features. The years went by, and his sheds filled up with the collection of Antique Tractors and Cars. When he was younger, he went to Maplewood Academy to school in Hutchinson, MN. This Seventh- Day Adventist school and church filled a large part of his growing up and his faith. Charles went on many missionary trips building churches from India to Mexico. Now in his older years, he has decided to sell his collection. Thinking of how important the Church is to his faith, he is donating his car and tractor collection to the Maplewood Academy School. The money from the sale of the collection will go toward many children’s education and encourage their faith.
